The contemporary design of the Kangaroo at Sunset coin has made it one of the most sought - after collector pieces from the Royal Australian Mint. Reproduced on this fine silver $1 coin, the lone kangaroo bounding across the desert plains against a settin g sun is a truly iconic Australian image.

The reverse design is by award - winning Mint sculptor Wojciech Pietranik and captures the spirit of Australia. The obverse features Ian Rank Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II accompanied by the coin’s $1 denomination.

The Perth Mint and Australia Post have joined forces to presented a joint special release celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first banknote in Australia, for the 2013 FIP World Stamp Exhibition.

In 1910 the Australian Notes Act was passed, and in 1913 the first series of Australian notes which were based on the old British system were issued.

The first Australian currency note, the ten shilling denomination was produced in May 1913. Other denominations from £1 to £1,000 followed during the years 1913 – 1915.

• The coin’s reverse features a coloured representation of Australia’s first ten shilling banknote. The inscription AUSTRALIA’S FIRST BANKNOTE 100TH ANNIVERSARY and the dates 1913 - 2013 are also portrayed in the design with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

The Royal Aus tralian Mint continues its Australia Remembers series which explores Australian war experiences and military history behind and beyond the battlefield. Like other Australian literary classics that the Baby Sets have featured, Ethel Pedley’s 1899 classic Dot and the Kangaroo painted a portrait of Australia as a place of great natural beauty, unique terrain and quirky, lovable animals. Dot and the Kangaroo has since become a much loved Australian children’s story.

Both the book and the 1977 feature film provide an insight into the experience of early settlers intertwined with the fantasy of the Australian bush coming alive. Pedley’s original preface implored readers to sympathise with native animals, “whose extinction, through ruthless destruction, is being surely accomplished”.

Immortalised on a $1 coin, author Ethel Pedley becomes the central character of this six coin collection. Woven through the charming plot of Dot and the Kangaroo are the themes of family and environmental conservation as well as images of native flora and fauna, which have all been vibrantly reproduced on both the inner coin wallet and outer packaging. The fastest mammal on land, the super-charged cheetah can reach incredible speeds of up to 113 kilometres an hour over short distances. Compare this to the fastest human who can run, arguably, at speeds of around 37 kilometres per hour.

The cheetah sometimes perches in high places to watch for prey. When it sights a likely victim, the cheetah begins to stalk. It creeps as close as possible before the attack. It may lift its head high to keep the prey in sight, but it keeps its body hidden. The cheetah is hard to see because its spotted coat blends with the tall, dry grass of its surroundings. Suddenly, the cheetah makes a lightning dash! If you are a hare, impala, wildebeest calf, antelope, warthog, or game bird – then you’re top of this creature’s list for lunch! After a chase, a cheetah needs half an hour to catch its breath before it can eat.

Once found throughout Asia and Africa, the species is now only scattered throughout limited areas of Iran and Africa. The cheetah starts life weighing between 250 - 300 grams at birth and can grow to an adult weight of up to 64 kilograms. No wonder this incredible cat is the fastest sprinter on earth!

During WWII, the Merchant Navy suffered a higher rate of casualties than any of the armed forces. The coin shows the 5001 tonne SS River Loddon ‘riding high’ at the end of another successful round trip. This ship was one of 8 River Class Vessels to serve from 1943 to 1947

The Royal Australian Mint’s 2012 Baby Set series features a Dot and the Kangaroo theme from 2012 to 2014. This children’s book was originally written in 1899 by Ethel C. Pedley and follows the adventures of a girl named Dot who gets lost in the Australian outback. This classically Australian book is part of our nation’s character and follows the tradition set by previous baby sets which depicted quintessentially Australian characters such as Blinky Bill, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and The Magic Pudding.

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 $1 uncirculated privy mark coins of Hobart, Adelaide, Darwin and Perth is the same design that graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963. The original design by George Kruger Gray was modelled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history.

Australia’s first nationally coordinated Census was taken on 2 April 1911. It contained 21 questions and revealed a population of 4 455 005 people. Many of these questions are still used today.

The Census of 1947 played an important role directing post–WWII Australia in the areas of migration and infrastructure, and from 1971 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were included in the official population enumeration.

The Census is important for determining where schools and hospitals are needed, allocating federal funding to states and territories, and planning community services and facilities. Continuing this fine tradition, the data from the 2011 Census will again be helping to chart the course of our nation’s future.

Uncirculated Silver Dollar In 2011 the Royal Australian Mint continues its long running Kangaroo Series with this stunning representation of the allied rock-wallaby.

 The allied rock-wallaby is commonly seen in north-east Queensland, on nearby Palm Island and Magnetic Island.

It skilfully hops around rocky cliffs feeding on grasses, fruits, seeds and flowers. During Autumn, the wallaby sheds its dark brown fur revealing a lighter coat that provides camouflage against the grasses that sprout around its rocky home.

The allied rock-wallaby was originally thought to be more widespread, but since genetic testing was introduced, five more distinct wallaby species were discovered, and are only distinguishable by the size and shape of their chromosomes

Centenary of RMC Duntroon 1911 - 2011 Coin 1oz Silver Proof Coin and Badge Set

The Perth Mint is celebrating 100 years of Duntroon, the Royal Military College of Australia responsible for training cadets for service as officers in the Australian Army.  Duntroon graduates have led Australian soldiers in every major military campaign in which Australia has been engaged.  Recognised as one of the world’s leading military colleges, it proudly upholds a famous tradition of training and developing some of the country’s most accomplished leaders.

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 $1 uncirculated ‘C’ mintmark and the privy mark coins of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne is the same design that graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963.

The original design was modeled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history.
