2012 will mark 70 years since the Kokoda campaign took place. During this campaign, a series of violent conflicts occurred along the notorious Kokoda Trail from August to November 1942. While the Gallipoli campaign of WWI was Australia’s first military test as a new nation, the fighting during the Kokoda campaign represents the first time in the nation’s history that its security was directly threatened.

The village of Isurava was the site of one of several battles fought by Australian troops during their retreat along the Kokoda Trail to Imita Ridge, and the advance to crossing of the Kumusi at Wairopi. The then Prime Minister John Howard and the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Sir Michael Somare unveiled a memorial to the Kokoda Trail campaign in Isurava on 14 August 2002.

The memorial is immediately adjacent to the site where Private Bruce Kingsbury performed an act of valour for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), the first VC awarded in Papua New Guinea.

Merchant mariners are a country’s lifeline, transporting essential supplies through wartime and peace. During WWII, the Merchant Navy suffered a higher rate of casualties than any of the armed forces. Their courage and commitment has been honoured with memorials and service medals, and now by the Royal Australian Mint.

The coin shows the 5001 tonne SS River Loddon ‘riding high’ at the end of another successful round trip. This ship was one of 8 River Class Vessels to serve from 1943 to 1947

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 $1 uncirculated privy mark coins of Hobart, Adelaide, Darwin and Perth is the same design that graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963. The original design by George Kruger Gray was modelled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. The allied rock-wallaby was originally thought to be more widespread, but since genetic testing was introduced, five more distinct wallaby species were discovered, and are only distinguishable by the size and shape of their chromosomes

In 2002 the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia and the Australian War Memorial agreed to build the National Service memorial.

On Wednesday 8 September the newly constructed National Service Memorial was dedicated at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. In recognition of this event Australia Post has produced this PNC to acknowledge the contribution made by National Servicemen between 1951 and 1972.
