This $25 Cook Island coin was issued to celebrate 100 years of Independence secured by the Islands chief, Makea Takau Ariki. When faced with the threat of colonisation, this resourceful women beat off the rival claims of France and Germany by applying to the British Government for protection. This was granted and in October 1988 and Captain Burke of the Hyacinth officially raised the Union Jack in Raratonga..
