Quick Overview

E Mint mark

On 1 January 2004 visitors to the Mint Visitors’ Gallery began striking ‘C’ for Canberra on the $1 aluminium bronze coin with its distinctive contemporary design capturing the 1854 Eureka Stockade. This mintmark has been a tradition since 1993.

The official launch of the $1 coins to mark the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade took place at the Eureka Centre, Ballarat, Victoria on 27 February 2004. The Eureka Centre is situated on the site of the historic reserve located on part of the original Eureka Lead where the violent uprising, considered one of the most significant events in the evolution of Australian democracy, took place. Now considered the birthplace of the Australian spirit and all that embodies ‘fairness’ and a ‘fair go’ for all, the Eureka Centre provides a dramatic focus for contemplation and reflection. Authenticating the theme and connecting the coin with this historic location, a feature of the launch was the striking of the letter ‘E’ for Eureka on the aluminium bronze $1 coin creating a unique mintmark. This is the first time in the history of the Royal Australian Mint’s mintmarks that ‘E’ has been struck on a coin
